Almeida Schools Programme

"This sort of partnership is so worthwhile for our students: it gives them the opportunity to work in a professional manner with different practitioners and then to perform in an exciting space to a live audience. I cannot value this too highly in terms of their development, learning and attainment." – Partner School Teacher

Partner Schools

In September 2017 the Almeida launched a new model of school partnerships providing schools with the option of two pathways for engaging with the work of the theatre. Critical Responses to Theatre will focus on supporting students to develop themselves as active and interrogative theatregoers and cultural critics while Creative Responses to Theatre will engage students directly in the theatre-making process, providing them with opportunities to devise their own work and perform on the Almeida stage.

Critical Responses to Theatre

A partnership model which focuses on developing a culture of theatre-going and critical debate within your school. This model can be used to support the following curriculum and learning areas: Drama and Theatre Studies, English Literature and Language, Citizenship Education, Leadership and Enterprise, Employability Skills, Enrichment and the Extended Project Qualification.

The partnership will include:

  • An allocation of up to 100 free tickets for use across the academic year.
  • Teachers’ Evening Tickets for 5 productions per year.
  • Critical response workshops around each production for the attending students – up to 5 in total.
  • A choice of one of the following projects:

Young Leadership Programme

A term long programme consisting of up to 8 workshops focused on developing skills in speech writing, public speaking and debate.

Young Directors Programme

A programme of up to 8 workshops introducing students to the role of a theatre director and developing your students’ ability to creatively interpret a text and lead exercises with their peers which are aimed at supporting actors to unlock the meaning of a text and create dynamic relationships on stage.

Optional Bronze Arts Award to be delivered alongside this programme.

Careers Programme

A programme of up to 8 workshops designed to introduce students to the range of career opportunities available within the theatre. These workshops will provide students with an insight into the process of producing a show from start to finish and highlight a range of backstage careers including producing, marketing and technical theatre.

Creative Responses to Theatre

A partnership model that supports the development of young performers and theatre-makers and encourages creative risk-taking within performance.

The partnership will include:

  • Teachers’ Evening Tickets for 5 productions per year.
  • Reimagining Almeida Productions – a term long devising and performance project for one group of students linked to an Almeida production.

Students will work with one lead and one supporting theatre-maker to create a short 5 – 10 minute performance to be presented on the Almeida stage for an audience of their peers and families.

Over the course of 8 sessions students will be introduced to a structured devising process providing them with the opportunity to work collaboratively in response to a given stimulus. This project will also develop the students’ practical understanding of a professional theatre-making process and enable them to create a high quality, cohesive final performance staged on the set of an Almeida production.

This project includes up to 30 tickets to a performance of the production that is being responded to.

  • In addition to the Reimagining Project schools can choose between the following 2 options:

 Option 1: Young Directors Programme

A short programme of 5 workshops introducing students to the role of a theatre director and developing your students’ ability to creatively interpret a text and lead exercises with their peers which are aimed at supporting actors to unlock the meaning of a text and create dynamic relationships on stage.

 Option 2: Theatre Tickets

Schools can access an additional 70 free tickets for use across the academic year – making a total of 100 tickets.
