The reality of multigenerational living

production information

‘Nobody has ever before asked the nuclear family to live all by itself in a box the way we do. With no relatives, no support, we’ve put it in an impossible situation.’ - Margaret Mead, anthropologist.

Adults boomeranging back to live with Mum and Dad. Garages converted into granny flats. As property prices soar, are there benefits to multigenerational living? Does sharing a microwave with your nan spark tension or foster intimacy? And what might we learn from cultures with a strong tradition of multigenerational households?

Inspired by Vassa, this Almeida Questions panel discusses shacking up with your extended family.

Almeida Questions is an eclectic programme of pre-show discussions which consider some of the questions raised by the work on our stage.

Manisha Patel spearheads urban design and masterplanning, regeneration and stakeholder consultation at PRP Architects. She is currently leading on some of PRP's most high profile projects including London's first Olympic legacy neighbourhood Chobham Manor, which won the Mayor's Prize at the 2019 New London Architecture awards. Here she developed a new typology which facilitates multi-generation living, a design and cultural expression of her upbringing. She is also responsible for the masterplan of the Pydar Street neighbourhood in Truro, where an emphasis has been placed on intergenerational living between students and older generations to ensure that the development is sustainable for successive generations. One of PRP's most innovative thinkers, Manisha brings creativity, motivational team leadership and expert knowledge in urban regeneration to the board. Manisha acts as a Mayor of London Design Advocate and provides expertise and guidance to the Mayor's Good Growth programme, which will ensure sustainable and inclusive development in the capital and the highest design standards on projects commissioned by the GLA.
