Dementia Friendly Performances

Dementia Friendly Performances are designed to support audience members living with Dementia, their families and carers. We aim to create an environment that is inclusive, supportive and welcoming.

The Show

Adaptations are made to ensure that there is a comfortable and enjoyable environment for everyone. The adaptations are a direct response to the content and style of the production and so will differ from show-to-show, but may include: 

• Changes to the show’s lighting and sound to reduce any sensory peaks or sudden moments 
• Low level lighting throughout, so you are never completely in the dark
• Music in the production may be reduced to a lower level where there is also dialogue

The Theatre

• Around the theatre there will be clear visual markers and signage to assist with orientation
• We will have additional staff members on duty throughout the venue including staff trained in Dementia Awareness
• In the auditorium there is relaxed attitude to movement and audience responses during the show
• Some seating will be kept off sale to reduce audience capacity and allow people to change their seating as needed
• A section of the bar will be available as a quiet space during the show

Before You Visit

Info Pack:
An info pack will be made available to audiences before their visit, which will include detailed information about the specific production including a brief overview, a scene-by-scene synopsis and other useful information. We will provide a visual story to the venue giving practical details of the space, including its facilities and how to get here. Full details of specific adaptations will be available to bookers between 7-10 days before the performance. 

Familiarisation Visit:
We welcome those who might benefit from visiting us before the date of the Dementia Friendly performance and have a café & bar that is open from two hours before a performance.
