Our community work involves bespoke projects which are born out of responses to our productions. Through these projects, we want to enable our local communities to contribute to the debate raised in our shows and to tell their own stories in response.
The Wave Community Response Project

In connection with the 2019 Almeida Young Company performance of The Wave, we invited community members to create a short response performance over five sessions. The participants worked with Jess Latowicki and Tim Cowbury, from made In China Theatre, to explore the ideas of liveness in theatre, and what is true in a performance. Their sharing was held on the set of the Wave.

As part of Islington’s 'Summerversity' programme, we held a week of workshops with local schools and Director Chris Sonnex to create a new piece of theatre featuring writing workshops, backstage tours and devising skills sessions as well as the chance to gain a Bronze Level Arts Award. The Summerversity "play in a week" project supported by Summerversity & Launchpad, Islington council culminated in the performance Student Body by Nicôle Lecky.

Shuffle was a response piece to Dance Nation, exploring the effect of music and song a dance with members of the community.
Alongside the Figures of Speech project, we hosted a Young Leaders programme. The Almeida Young Leaders is a scheme giving young people with something vital to say the tools and platform to do so. Each young leader has been mentored by a writer and director to develop their ideas, structuring a speech and skills in public speaking.
