Coronavirus (COVID-19) FAQs

BY Almeida Theatre   March 16, 2020

Following government advice, we have taken the very difficult decision to temporarily close the Almeida Theatre. Please find below some FAQs regarding our temporary closure. You can read our full statement here.

Is the Almeida Theatre closed?
Yes. Following government advice, and alongside other UK theatres, we have temporarily closed the theatre. The length of closure is currently unknown and we will constantly review this in line with the latest government advice.

Have you cancelled all performances?
Yes. We have made the sad decision to postpone all scheduled performances of “Daddy” A Melodrama and The House of Shades until a later date. All other events at the theatre including Almeida Questions and Theatre Tours have also been postponed.

When will “Daddy” and The House of Shades be postponed until?
I'm afraid we just can't say right now and it depends on many factors. Most crucially it is impossible for us to know how long this closure will last and therefore plan any future programming. As soon as we know more our supporters and audiences will be the first to know.

I have a ticket for “Daddy” and/or The House of Shades what are my options?
You are able to do any of the following:

  • You can turn your ticket price into a gift to the Almeida Theatre to support us as we navigate this uncertain time. We are a charity and only 10% of our income each year comes from the UK government via Arts Council England. This will help us continue to commission artists, produce new work and deliver our artistic and participation programmes in future.
  • Credit the cost of your ticket to your account that you can use to purchase a ticket for a future performance. This credit is valid for two years.
  • Claim a full refund to your original method of payment.

Please do not contact your credit card company as that will slow the process down and put an additional burden on our box office team.

Why should I donate my ticket price to the Almeida Theatre?
The Almeida is a charity and is heavily dependent on ticket sale revenue and donations from individuals, companies and trusts to operate. Just 10% of our overall income comes from government funding via Arts Council England. In light of this, a full refund of any lost performances is financially devastating for us, so if they are able to we are asking all ticket holders to please consider donating the cost of their ticket rather than requesting a credit note or refund.

What if I can’t afford to support the Almeida at this time?
We totally understand if you are unable to offer us support at this time and we can offer you a refund or credit note.

How can I help the Almeida Theatre while you are closed?
You can make a donation of any amount online here. Each and every penny counts for us right now, and any donation, large or small, will make a huge difference.
You can alternatively buy a membership here from £60 which will give you priority booking when we announce our new programme of work. Gift memberships are also available here, which can include two-top priced tickets for a future show for £145.

Is the Almeida Theatre building and or Café & Bar open?
No. During the time of the closure the building will remain closed to the public, this includes the Café & Bar as well as the in-person Box Office. You can still contact the Box Office on 020 7359 4404 or email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
