Young Company

Our Young Company aims to give emerging artists the opportunity to develop as theatre-makers, performers and creative artists, supporting their artistic development pathways.

Each Young Company project has a different focus and responds to our mainstage artistic work – all explore acting with text, including character analysis, development and intentions, working with professional creatives to explore the theatre making process, and culminating in performances on the Almeida stage.

We run two Young Company groups: 14-18 years and 18-25 years. Recruitment takes place at different times throughout the year, depending on the project dates – and is usually through in person auditions and/or self-tapes.

Almeida Young Company is an opportunity for young people who haven’t had formal drama school training (foundation, BA or MA).

REVERB (2026)

Performed by our 18-25 Young Company, Reverb was a celebration of the last twelve years under the leadership of Artistic Director Rupert Goold and Executive Director Denise Wood, and of the people and work that have defined this chapter of the Almeida.

Each performance was a curation of extracts from fourteen of the most significant and influential Almeida plays from the last decade, including The Writer by Ella Hickson, The Clinic by Dipo Baruwa-Etti, and Olivier Award-winning Chimerica by Lucy Kirkwood, among others.

BRINK (2026)

Brink was a collection of four new plays inspired by Anya Reiss’s upcoming retelling of A Doll’s House performed by the Almeida 14–18 Young Company.

Playwrights Josh Elliott, Seb Gardner, Martha Loader and Stefanie Reynolds were commissioned to write short plays in response to the key themes of Henrik Ibsen’s classic drama. The creative brief prompted each writer to consider the dramatic revelation of a secret which, once exposed, detonates the lives of the characters around it. As relationships are pushed to the edge, the truth destabilises their identities and a hidden rot is unearthed.

AGAINST THE TIDE (2025)

Commissioned in response to Ava Pickett‘s 1536, five new stories explored the parallels between historical events and ordinary lives, featuring Hannah Khalil’s Blood Fruit, Anne Odeke’s Don’t Drink the Water, Guleraana Mir’s The Cosmic Ocean, Eloise Pennycott’s 1838, and Sebastian Gardner’s The Book of Mawther.

What happens in the space between monarchies and the working class, between governments and the checkout girls, between state-sanctioned power there and the power claimed here?
